“THE FOUNDING.”
Chemist A.F. Rapoport purchases an exhibition booth at the Saint Louis World’s Fair to debut his "make-at-home" kit for Hot Buttered Rum Winter Elixir. Confident that the new food and beverage competition would be minimal at best, he is somewhat disheartened to discover the first public appearances of the following products: the hamburger, the hot dog, peanut butter, iced tea, and cotton candy. However, the well-known owner of the largest chain of chemist shops in the country, R. Dunsmuir, is taken by the simplicity of Rapoport’s invention…so much so that she enjoys 8 glasses of the elixir and has to be carried out of the fair…and signs a contract in perpetuity with Rapoport to go into business producing HBRs. |
