Hot Buttered Rum -- 1980 - 1989

“war and peace.”

In spring of 1980, Dunsmuir & Rapoport are ordered by the courts to cease operations, and spend the next 5 years in litigation. When the dust finally clears, the partners apologize and once again get back to what they do best: making a rich, buttery, spirit-based elixir. To commemorate this new beginning, Dunsmuir & Rapoport launch “New HBR.” The public hates it. It tastes nothing like the HBR of old, and the packaging looks like something out of “Back to the Future 2” (when Marty and the Doc travel to the year 2015). But the publicity is immense and critics speculate it is all an elaborate ploy to make money. And they do make money…a lot of money. The company goes public, and before decade’s end, HBR Inc. is a Fortune 500 company. Dunsmuir & Rapoport also begin a string of successful HBR products, including the wine cooler knock-off, “HBR Summer Chillers,” “HBR Shooters” (single shot pouches of 150 proof HBRs,) and for backyard grilling enthusiasts, “HBR Marinade and Basting Batter.”
